Masonry work shares many of the benefits of dry stone work - variety of stone to choose from, building styles, etc. It also has some other benefits that makes it preferable in some situations, for example, public places often have health and safety laws requiring the use of cement or mortar to fix walls securely. This can be done in such a way as to still give the appearance of a dry stone wall if desired, this technique is commonly referred to as 'cladding'. An example of this technique can be seen at the Scottish Seabird Centre. The decision to build a wall using dry stone or masonry is usually determined by the suitability of the environment and the preference of the customer. To see examples of some of the masonry work I've carried out take a look through the photos below. St Andrews bus station
One of the more interesting masonry jobs I have worked on, we had move this wall stone by stone five metres back to widen the road. This was done by carefully numbering and photographing each of the stones as we stripped the wall down to ensure we reconstructed it as it was originally.

This wall had to be stripped down and moved 3 metres back to widen the road. This was another project at Heriot-Watt University.
